Standing ovation in two rounds
Jan Garbarek with Rainer Brüninghaus, Yuri Daniel and Trilok Gurtu opened Jazzfest 2026 this week with a sold-out concert in Olavshallen in Trondheim. After the response from both the audience and critics, we are looking forward to the concert even more. Ibsenhuset October 1st.
The champion blew us off the field
"...together with his regular band for many years, he held a cracking good and entertaining opening concert during the Trondheim Jazz Festival on Tuesday. Not least thanks to the game changer and rhythmic wizard, Trilok Gurtu. No wonder 1200 audience members thanked him with a standing ovation in two rounds. How many times has Jan Garbarek played at Jazzfest now? It's starting to be quite a few, yet the meeting with Garbarek and the band felt vital and fresh, and not least long-awaited. The tickets were sold out in a short time already in January.

Our director is ecstatic about the booking
The news that Jan Garbarek will have one of his very few concerts in Norway this year at Ibsenhuset was released in April. Our director was very happy with the booking. In Ibsenhuset In his newsletter, he explained why. The newsletter also included access to a closed pre-sale, where over 170 tickets were snapped up on the first night.
The director says:
"Some artists mean more than others to us who work with programming. For me, Jan Garbarek is one of them. Ever since I started organizing concerts over 20 years ago, this has been a dream.
Garbarek is one of the very few Norwegian musicians who has both broad international influence and a close relationship with the audience here at home. He plays rarely, and is very conscious of where and how he sets up his concerts. This has been a demanding booking to get in place – both because Garbarek does few concerts, and because the interest is enormous. That is why we are also extra proud to have made it happen!
For me, this is a concert that represents the best of what we want to be at Ibsenhuset : quality over time, artistic weight and strong audience experiences. Welcome!»
