It's not often that you have the opportunity to hear and see Jan Garbarek play in Norway. The concert here at Ibsenhuset next fall will be one of the few concerts he will give in 2026!
It is recommended to seize the opportunity when you have it; experience some of the greatest in the European jazz scene – Jan Garbarek, Rainer Brüninghaus, Yuri Daniel and Trilok Gurtu.
This is the man who is undoubtedly considered one of the style-setting musicians in European jazz. And this has remained the case for the past fifty years. Countless musicians around the world have been influenced by the sound of this Norwegian saxophonist, often described as hymn-like, lyrical, vocal, ethereal, meditative and absolutely Scandinavian. Instead of resting on his laurels, Jan Garbarek continues to strive for new and better musical experiences, preferably live in concert: “I just try to play what I myself want to hear,” Garbarek explains modestly. “If someone else can relate to it, that’s great,” he continues.
Jan Garbarek has a track record of rare distinction, a list that encompasses over 30 albums under his own name with international stars such as Keith Jarret, Ralph Towner, Terje Rypdal, Bobo Stenson, Charlie Haden, Bill Frisell, Manu Katché, Marilyn Mazur and Trilok Gurtu, to name a few.
Garbarek received the Buddy Award, the Norwegian Jazz Forum's highest award, as early as 1968, and was appointed Knight of the 1st Class of the Order of St. Olav in 1999. When he first heard John Coltrane on the radio as a young man, he quickly decided to become a musician. Shortly afterwards, he won both the 1st soloist prize and the 1st orchestra prize in the NM for jazz amateurs in 1962. In his younger years, he cultivated expressive free jazz and its pioneers, but from the 1970s he changed direction towards cultivating tonal quality and melody-driven improvisation. Although we like to call his expression Nordic, it still bears the mark of American jazz traditions, in addition to reflecting his interest in all the world's folk music.
Jan Garbarek is constantly composing new music, and tours with his band, consisting of German pianist Rainer Brüninghaus, who has been with the band for thirty years, Brazilian bassist Yuri Daniel, and Indian master percussionist Trilok Gurtu.
This will be a rare evening!
