BCUC – Skien World ung

Afropsychedelic punk legends from South Africa

Few concerts in Skien World Ung's history have hit harder, with a greater musical shock effect, than when BCUC from Soweto in South Africa took the stage at the National Jazz Scene a few years ago.

BCUC – Bantu Continua Uhuru Consciousness – combines funk, hip-hop consciousness and punk rock energy from Soweto, South Africa. The band began practicing in a shipping container a stone’s throw from the church where Desmond Tutu organized the escape of some of Soweto’s most wanted anti-apartheid activists. Since then, they have grown into a celebrated and deeply respected band, known for creating intense connections with audiences around the world.
“We make music for the people, by the people, with the people,” says vocalist Nkosi “Jovi” Zithulele. It’s an apt motto for the band’s expression – outspoken lyrics delivered with punk-like intensity, over a massive and hypnotic Afro-fusion soundscape. The music is both raw and nuanced, driven by strong percussive grooves and the inventive, agile bass playing of Motsere Jan Nzimande.
For BCUC, music is both a hedonistic trance and a tool for political and spiritual liberation. They lift up the voices of those rarely heard, especially workers at the bottom of society. All this is conveyed through concerts that are as uncompromising as they are electric.

Now they are ready for Skien World Ung. This is not just a concert – it is an experience.
