Skien World: Marianna Sangita Røe og Trondheim Jazzorkester

Marianna Sangita Angeletaki Røe's "Home" is a deeply personal, ambitious work that spans several musical traditions. The singer and percussionist have put together what is possibly the most stylistically diverse version of the legendary Trondheim Jazz Orchestra to date.

Here we hear performers of joik, Greek folk music, Arabic maqam, Carnatic music and Balkan traditions. The music is inspired by Røes' own studies of the maqam tradition in Crete, as well as her search for a sense of home in the world, a reconciliation of her Norwegian and Greek roots. It is based on monophonic melodies and rhythms, common material in several musical traditions, which are shared and played with by the many talented musicians on stage.

In addition to telling her own story, "Home" has also been Marianna's way of giving Norwegian improvised music a little push in a positive direction. It's more diverse than ever, but an orchestra like this, where jazz is just one of many perspectives on improvisation and interaction, feels like something new. There are moments of intimacy and introspection in these songs - but when the members of "Hjem" meet, it also feels like a grand social gathering, filling arenas with joy of playing, rhythmic ecstasy and dreams of new musical possibilities.

This concert is part of the Movement network and can be experienced in Molde, Tromsø and Skien.
The concert in Skien is organized by Skiensjazzdraget and Ibsenhuset and is part of Skien World.
