Mrs. Inger to Østråt – DVD screening

The film Fru Inger til Østråt, directed by Sverre Udnes, takes us back to the 16th century and into one of the most dramatic periods in Norwegian history. The film premiered in 1975 and is based on Henrik Ibsen's historical play. It depicts the powerful noblewoman Inger Ottesdatter til Austrått – one of the strongest and most enigmatic figures of the Renaissance.

As a woman at Austråttborgen, she finds herself in the middle of political intrigue that crosses both national borders and loyalties. The struggle between the Danish king, Norwegian nobles, and Swedish rebels puts both the country and Inger's own family in danger. The plot revolves around Mrs. Inger's choice to go against her countrymen and ally with the Danes for the sake of her illegitimate son.

The film's central themes are national identity and political responsibility, power, realpolitik and moral compromise, the relationship between personal guilt and historical guilt.

The film evokes a dark, intense atmosphere with strong acting performances and provides a believable picture of power, courage and morality in a time when much was at stake.

This is an evocative film adaptation – a story about courage, secrets and the consequences of choices made.
